Preliminary findings of vocational training in Nigeria: a cross-sectional survey of outcomes and implications

Abstract

Amaudo Itumbauzo is a non-governmental organisation in south east Nigeria providing services for the most severely mentally ill; those who end up homeless. Work training is an integral part of rehabilitation in a society where all members of a family are expected to make a contribution to the home. This cross-sectional study looks at the engagement in work activities of residents discharged from the residential rehabilitation facility. A sample of all those discharged during the past three years was identifiedand 51 interviews were carried out. One third of ex-residents were found to be engaged in work. Of those not working half had never started work upon returning to the community. The findings were presented to staff at the rehabilitation centre who contributed to the interpretation of the results. Conclusions are drawn about developing the vocational training service. Further research needs are identified and suggestions are made for the role of occupational therapists in an African context.
