From concept to practice: recovery-oriented practice in psychiatric occupational therapy service in Hong Kong

Abstract

Mental health recovery has become an overarching aim of mental health service systems around the world. The aim of this article is to highlight how the recovery-oriented practice was adopted by occupational therapists in a local psychiatric hospital in Hong Kong. The transformation began with the feedback of service users, which led to the development of an occupational therapy recovery service framework and subsequently 44 training programmes in the domains of self-management, work, life skills and cognitive function. Strategies and programmes to empower service users through participation and building on strengths and partnership are described. Challenges encountered and experience in leading the transformation are also discussed.
