Abstract

The treatment of chronic pain is a challenge to all caregivers. Research and practice show that the optimal way to treat chronic pain is through a multidisciplinary approach. The Pain Relief Unit (PRU) in Rambam Medical Center was established 25 years ago. The staff includes healthcare professionals from different fields working in close co-operation in the treatment of acute pain, cancer pain and chronic pain. Occupational therapy (OT) is an integral part of the PRU staff, since 1995. The present article describes the PRU at Rambam Medical Center, focusing on the work of the OT and sharing our clinical experience in the treatment of chronic pain. Occupational Therapy’s unique contribution to pain management is indisputable. Our profession’s emphasis and knowledge contributes to the wellbeing of our patients and we encourage more OTs to take part in treating chronic pain patients.
